Helping property owners understand that a building is a system. If you are not testing, you are guessing.

About Us

At Midwest Healthy Home, we believe that health starts in the home. Midwest healthy home helps property owners troubleshoot moisture problems, Air quality concerns, and Energy Efficiency Issues.

We know that all buildings are designed to work as a system. Just like the human body is designed to work as a system. If one or multiple parts of the system are not working properly the whole system can be negatively affected. The health of the structure has a direct effect on the health of the occupants.

At Midwest Healthy Home, we are dedicated to discovering the root cause of the problems in the home.

Our Services

  Healthy home consulting

This is a complete overview of the home as a system.  This can help diagnose water Intrusion, Ice dam issues, high energy bills, indoor air quality concerns, and possible mold issues.

This Includes:

 • Indoor air quality testing
 • Moisture testing• Building shell evaluation with IR camera
 • Attic ventilation evaluation
 • Mechanical system evaluation
 • A report outlining any issues and what steps need to be taken to remedy the issues.
Identifying the problems is the first step.  Crafting a plan of action is what we specialize in.

Energy Code Testing and Consulting

State energy codes have undergone continuous changes over the years.  Midwest Heatly Home can help you navigate the codes during your building and remodeling projects.

This Includes:

  • Blower Door testing for code compliance

Ductwork testing for code compliance

Stucco and Building Shell Moisture Testing

Building moisture issues can go undetected for years.  Once a moisture issue is detected, it is essential to identify the source of the moisture.

This includes:

  • Exterior stucco testing using moisture meters
  • Building shell testing with blower door assisted IR Camera inspection
  • Surface and Probe testing on building components.

Once the source of the moisture is identified, a detailed report outlining the scope of work will be completed, enabling contractors to properly estimate the required work.

Mold Testing

Residential mold testing is the process of identifying and assessing mold growth within a home to determine if there is a mold problem that could impact indoor air quality or the integrity of building materials. Here’s an overview of the key aspects:

Why Mold Testing Is Done

  • Health Concerns: Mold can cause respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and aggravate asthma.
  • Musty Odors or Visible Mold: Unexplained odors or visible growth may indicate a larger hidden issue.
  • Water Damage or Leaks: Past or ongoing moisture problems can create conditions for mold growth.
  • Real Estate Transactions: Testing may be required for disclosure or peace of mind before buying or selling a property

Types of Mold Testing

  1. Air Sampling
    • Measures mold spores in the air.
    • Indoor levels are compared to outdoor levels to determine if a problem exists.
    • Can detect hidden mold, but may be influenced by recent activity (e.g., cleaning or movement).
  2. Surface Sampling
    • Swabs, tape lifts, or contact plates collect mold from surfaces.
    • Identifies type of mold present but doesn’t indicate spore levels in air.
  3. Bulk Sampling
    • Pieces of building materials (e.g., drywall, insulation) are removed and tested.
    • Useful for understanding the extent of contamination.
  4. Dust Sampling
    • Tests settled dust for mold DNA (e.g., ERMI test).
    • More focused on long-term exposure history rather than current spore counts.
  5. Moisture and Humidity Testing
    • Often used in conjunction with mold testing.
    • Infrared cameras and moisture meters help identify moisture sources that promote mold growth.

What Happens After Testing

  • Lab Analysis: Samples are sent to a lab for identification and quantification.
  • Report: Includes types of mold found, concentrations, and potential sources.
  • Recommendations: If mold is found, remediation steps may be suggested.

Important Considerations

  • Mold is everywhere: Some level of airborne mold is normal.
  • Not all mold is toxic: “Black mold” (Stachybotrys chartarum) is not always dangerous, but may indicate a serious moisture problem.
  • Testing is only part of the process: Finding and fixing moisture sources is critical to long-term resolution.

General Construction Consulting

This Includes:

  • Working with utility and government programs as a liaison between contractors and homeowners.
  • Working with building and remodeling contractors to evaluate projects before, during, and after to ensure no unintended consequences happen. Building and energy codes don’t always work well together.  Midwest Healthy Home specializes in achieving the best possible results for both the builder and the client.
